During composting, bio-waste and biochar are alternately layered, and care must be taken to ensure that the top layer of the biochar is duly covered with bio-waste (or a mixture of soil and bio-waste), and to avoid dust losses. The added value is the activation (wetting) of the biochar during the process of composting and sorption of nitrates. This necessary activation is achieved in that the inactivated (dry) biochar, which has a high water absorption, absorbs a large amount of water (released from composted biomass), which is rich in various nutrients.
