Use of biochar
BIOCHAR AS A SORBENT
Due to its high reactive surface (up to hundreds of m2/g) and high stability, biochar can be used as a promising sorbent for removing various contaminants from:
- contaminated soils (e.g. auxiliary substance in brownfield reclamation),
- acid mine water (pH adjustment, sorption of metal ions),
- urban grey water (chemical filtration after pre-treatment of grey water),
- potential sources of drinking water (e.g. removing pesticides or nitrates - cheap replacement of activated carbon filters).
A variety of modifications can also be made that can increase or multiply the sorption efficiency of the resulting biochar:
- magnetic impregnation of biochar,
- coating of biochar surface with various secondary oxides Mn, Al and Fe,
- impregnation using nanoparticles (e.g. nanoiron),
- chemical activation of surface.
