Partners of the V4 Biochar Platform are mainly involved in dealing with the following thematic areas:
- Production of stable organic matter (biochar) from waste biomass with limited carbon dioxide emissions with a positive impact on the retention of water and nutrients in the soil and reduction of the negative impact of agricultural drought.
- Treatment of vineyards via the application of biochar to increase soil retention ability.
- Processing of sewage sludge for the production of sludge-char and its subsequent use as a sorbent.
- Replacement of conventional garden substrate with bio-waste (compost) containing biochar.
- Biochar production, which may also be used as a feed additive for cattle and other livestock to reduce greenhouse gas emissions during digestion.
- Use of biochar as a bio-sorbent for remediation of contaminated soils or wastewater treatment.
- Various types of biochar modifications to increase sorption properties.
- Re-use of purified grey wastewater as a watering for intensive green roofs containing biochar or compost with biochar, in order to bring the “Sponge City” idea to fruition.
- Purification of drinking water (coming from natural reservoirs - collectors) using activated charcoal based on biochar affected by increased concentrations of, for example, nitrates or various pesticides.
- Use of wood attacked by the bark beetle as a source for production of biochar and its subsequent use in establishing new forest nurseries.
- Evaluation of the economic viability of biochar production with regard to its subsequent use for soil and groundwater protection.
- The socio-economic and socio-ecological aspect as a positive impact on society is also expected (e.g. healthier environment, more public greenery, better crop production and thus positive thinking of society as a whole).
